Chiang Mai is growing quickly, but half an hour beyond the city the countryside still keeps its own pace. On a small organic farm, a local couple open their home to you for the day. You’ll walk the land with them, pick whatever happens to be in season, and hear how they came to farm this way, and why they chose a slower life so close to a fast-changing city.

Then to the kitchen. Depending on the time of year, you might crack coconuts for fresh milk, prepare vegetables straight from the beds or help with a simple Thai dessert, before sitting down to a meal made from what you’ve just gathered. You can share it with your hosts or, if you’d prefer, have the table to yourselves. Afterwards there’s time to wander the farm or simply sit in the quiet before heading back to town.
It suits families particularly well, and anyone who would rather spend a few hours with the people who grow the food than in a cooking school.
Good to know: this is a working farm, not a restaurant, so vegetarian diets are easy but other dietary requirements are difficult to cater for. Drinks are water, herbal juice, tea and coffee. Wear light clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Your guide comes with you to help translate.
Private to your party. Morning or late-afternoon visits, year-round, weather permitting.
